A road has been closed in Alloa after a mine shaft collapse near businesses.

Emergency services were made aware of the damage on Clackmannan Road at around 1.10pm on Monday.

The stretch of road has been shut between Clackmannan roundabout and Hilton Road.

STV News understands that the sinkhole was reported to Clackmannanshire Council and police by the owner of Hanna Cars Ltd, who noticed that a hole had appeared in the ground nearby.

The Mining Remediation Authority has confirmed it is on the scene, filling in the collapsed mine shaft to “stabilise the affected area”, with hopes of reopening the road on Tuesday.

The UK Government body stated that the sinkhole is not related to the ongoing incident in nearby Coalsnaugton, which has seen 97 homes evacuated since May due to ground movements caused by former mining activity.

A Mining Remediation Authority spokesperson said: “On Monday, August 17 we were made aware of a mine shaft collapse on land off the A907.

“Working closely with Police Scotland and other partners, we immediately fenced off the site to keep people safe and we’re working quickly to fill the hole with stone to stabilise the affected area so that the road can reopen today.

“We’d like to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident, and it is completely unrelated to the incident we are dealing with at Coalsnaughton.”
