Bike charity reopens its doors for contactless donations

A charity that refurbishes used bikes has reopened for contactless donations.

The Bike Station, which has bases in both Edinburgh and Perth, stopped accepting donations following Government advice issued over the coronavirus pandemic.

Now every Friday – between 10am and 4.30pm – members of the public can drop off their old bikes at a safe distance from the workers.

The bikes will then be repaired, refurbished and readied for the road – with some given away free to key workers as part of the charity’s Hero Bikes initiative.

Sasha Taylor, chief executive of The Bike Station, said: “Now more than ever our key workers need our support.

“We know bikes can help, by providing access to safe and affordable independent transport and just as importantly, a means to look after their own health and well-being.

“We’ve launched Hero Bikes to support our key workers who are giving their all to protect our communities”

The charity will accept any type of bike as long as it is in a good condition – meaning it has to have two wheels, pedals and handlebars.

At the moment it is unable to accept bikes which would only be suitable for recycling by scrapping the metal.

Drop off instructions

Edinburgh:

  • Leave your bike next to the ‘donate a bike’ sign outside the warehouse – which is three doors up from the shop.

Perth:

  • Leave your bike next to the ‘donate a bike’ sign outside the main door of the shop.

If you can, give the team a wave to let them know you have left a donation.

The Bike Station – which promotes cycling as a sustainable means of transport – sells the donations at affordable prices.

As well as upcycling, the charity also provides cycle and bike maintenance training.
