Girl, 11, found dead in water in woodland park

Emergency services were called to Gore Glen near Gorebridge, Midlothian, on Thursday

The body of an 11-year-old girl has been found in a woodland park in Midlothian.

Emergency services were called to the Gore Glen area, near Gorebridge, around 12.40pm on Thursday, following concerns for the girl.

The 11-year-old was found in the Gore Water near Shank Bridge around 4.25pm and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are treating the death as unexplained, and investigations are ongoing.

Two ambulances, a special operations team and a critical care paramedic were dispatched to the scene alongside two fire engines.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We were made aware of concern for an 11-year-old girl in the Gore Glen area, near Gorebridge around 12.40pm on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

“The body of the girl was found in the Gore Water near to Shank Bridge around 4.25pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her family are aware.

“Her death is being treated as unexplained, and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 4.29pm on Thursday, August 6, Operations Control mobilised two appliances to an incident on Shank Bridge, near Gorebridge, to support emergency services partners.

“Crews left after ensuring the area was safe.” 

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 2.33pm on Thursday to attend an incident in Gorebridge and dispatched two ambulances, our special operations team and a critical care paramedic to the scene.”
