A baby memorial site in a Fife cemetery has been targeted by vandals.

Offensive graffiti and messages including ‘one less rat’ ‘f*** you’s’ and ‘Covid hoax’ were painted over the gravestones late on Friday night or early on Saturday morning.

Other graves in Dunfermline Cemetery were covered in spray paint.

Locals have been hitting out at the “sick” people responsible.

Commenting on the Fife Jammer Facebook page, Margaret Hazzel said: “Oh my god! What kind of individual does something like that? Shameful behaviour.”

And Elizabeth Whyte said: “Oh my goodness that’s just sick’ if only they knew the heartache with each of these little names.”

Hundreds of others echoed those sentiments with comments like “heart breaking”, “disgusting” and “awful”.

The incident was reported to police on Saturday morning and the graffiti has since been removed.

A spokesman for the force said: “At around 10am on Saturday, we were contacted with regard to a vandalism at a baby memorial within Dunfermline Cemetery, Halbeath Road, Dunfermline.

“Officers have attended and the graffiti has been removed. Enquiries, which are at a very early stage, are continuing.”
