A council has said it is taking action against a group of travellers who have illegally set up caravans in a field in Musselburgh.

East Lothian Council previously confirmed that around 20 vans arrived at Levenhall Links last week, after two access gates had been broken into.

A spokesperson said that a group of travellers remain in the field and the council will continue to work with Police Scotland to resolve the situation.

They said: “A group of travellers remain at Levenhall Links having illegally gained access to the field.

“Action is under way and we are working in partnership with Police Scotland to resolve the situation in line with the legal protocols relating to such issues.”

Locals who use the area for walking and cycling previously complained to the council about alleged abusive language directed at them.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of an unauthorised encampment in the area of Musselburgh Lagoons on Monday, August 7, 2023.

“Officers continue to attend and engage with the group.”
