The Edinburgh City bypass on the A720 was closed at rush hour due to a vehicle on fire.
The incident took place near the Straiton junction around 6.50am on Thursday with emergency services on the scene.
Police said there are no reported injuries as drivers were urged to avoid the area.
A Police Scotland statement: “The A720 Edinburgh city bypass is closed westbound at the Straiton junction following a vehicle fire, reported to police around 6.50am on Thursday, January 9.
“Road users are advised to please avoid the area.
“There are no reported injuries.”
Traffic Scotland said: “The A720 westbound between Straiton and Lothianburn is closed due to an on going police incident.
“Road users are advised to use an alternative route and allow extra time for their journey.”
In an update, they added: “The Westbound carriageway is now open following an earlier vehicle fire.
“Heavy traffic still remains and is still backed up to Old Craighall.”
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
