iStockA private jet blocking the runway at an airport on the Canary Islands forced hundreds of Scots passengers to be diverted overnight.
Easyjet passengers on flight 3201 from Edinburgh bound for Tenerife on Thursday were diverted to Gran Canaria after leaving the Scottish capital over an hour late.
Some holidaymakers were stuck at Las Palmas and arrived in Tenerife after 9pm – a number of hours after the scheduled arrival time.
FlightRadar reported an executive jet was blocking the runway at Tenerife South with operations halted until it was towed away.
Passengers were warned of disruption including diversions to alternative airports and delays.
Another easyJet service travelling from Tenerife to Edinburgh had to be diverted to Madrid overnight after the flight landed around 11pm due to crew reaching their safety regulated hours.
Passengers are now set to fly to the Scottish capital around 7.30pm on Friday.
An easyJet spokesperson said: “Due to delays caused by the temporary closure of Tenerife runway on 2 January, the crew of flight EZY3202 were unable to operate to Edinburgh within their safety regulated operating hours.
“As hotel accommodation in Tenerife was extremely limited, we operated the flight via Madrid where we could provide customers with hotel accommodation and meals before continuing the flight today.
“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority and while this was outside of our control, we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
