Edinburgh Playhouse has cancelled a show three hours before it was due to start amid a red alert in Scotland for Storm Eowyn bringing a “danger to life”.

A performance of The Rocky Horror Show, due to start at 5pm in the midst of a severe warning for wind with gusts of up to 100mph, was cancelled after 2pm on Friday.

Jason Donovan is starring as the legendary Frank ‘N’ Furter in the UK tour of Richard O’Brien’s play.

The announcement comes as customers vented their frustration at the late call-off with ScotRail trains suspended across the country and a warning not to travel.

Isla Kinghorn, from Stirling, was due to watch the show with a friend as part of a Christmas gift.

However she said there had been no communication with the Playhouse throughout Friday and that it was “bitterly disappointing”

She told STV News: “We got an email last night saying looking forward to welcoming you tomorrow and people started to get angry because other venues had cancelled their shows.

“We got an email at 10am talking about ordering your drinks and snacks for the show.

“There had been absolutely no communication from them. It’s unacceptable.

“It is bitterly disappointing that the Playhouse and ATG Tickets have chosen to put greed ahead of the safety of their customers and staff.

“How were they at any point going to put on a show to satisfy customers?”

A rare red Met Office weather alert has been extended to cover a larger area as dangerous gusts cause widespread damage and disruption.

The storm is expected to bring the most intense weather in recent history, with wind speeds of 100mph.

Police in Edinburgh urged people to stay indoors with officers across the city attending reports of fallen trees and damage caused to buildings.

They say they are being “met with lots of residents examining damage” and asked members of the public to stay indoors to avoid risk from further falling debris.

ATG Entertainment informed customers of the Rocky Horror cancellation before 2pm, around three hours before the show was due to start.

An 8.30pm showing of the same performance is still listed as going ahead on the Playhouse’s website.

A statement from the Playhouse on X read: “Due to the Met Office’s red weather warning affecting Edinburgh, and the subsequent Government advice not to travel before 5pm, the performance of The Rocky Horror Show due to take place today Friday January 24 at 5.00pm has been cancelled.

“Ticket holders will be contacted directly by their point of purchase regarding options available for their booking.

“We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.”

ATG were contacted for comment.
