A number of major roads and two primary schools in Edinburgh have been closed off in preparation for the arrival of the Queen’s coffin in the city.

The former monarch’s body will be transported from the Aberdeenshire estate of Balmoral on Sunday and will rest at the Palace of Holyroodhouse before being moved in a procession to St Giles’ Cathedral.

She will lie in state for 24 hours, allowing members of the public to pay their respects.

However, the process, known as Operation Unicorn after Scotland’s national animal, means a number of prominent access routes will be shut off for several days.

City of Edinburgh council said it was working with Police Scotland to plan for the arrival of mourners from across the country.

Royal Mile Primary School, Abbeyhill Primary School and the Cowgate Early Years Centre will remain closed to pupils on Monday and Tuesday due to their proximity to events.

People have been advised to avoid the Old Town unless they are taking part in mourning events and plan essential journeys ahead to cope with disruption.
