The Scottish capital has been named as the world’s best city to visit this year on a renowned list of travel recommendations.
Edinburgh beat the likes of Prague, Madrid, Taipei, and New York to claim the top spot in the annual Time Out index as the most “beautiful and walkable city” on the planet.
The capital was also voted the second easiest city to express who you are and third easiest to take a walk in nature or a greenspace.
Glasgow took fourth place on the list and was voted the friendliest and second most affordable city in the world.
Every year, Time Out surveys thousands of city-dwellers around the world about life in their hometown right now.
Using their responses, editors compile an annual ranking of the world’s best cities, in order to point people in the direction of the places which locals are raving about.
Last year, the list focused on how cities have pulled together through the pandemic, in particular when it comes to community spirit and resilience.
This year, after a prolonged period of limited travel, people are itching to get back out there. So for the 2022 ranking, Time Out has added extra weight to the things that make cities great places to visit as well as to live.
The top cities this year are places that excel at going out, including eating and drinking; art, culture and museums; and nightlife.
Dave Calhoun, chief content officer, North America and UK at Time Out, said: “This year, we are showcasing the cities that locals, and our editors, not only love living in, but that we think everyone should be visiting. Many people will be planning their first city break in a long time, and our list of the best cities in the world provides the ultimate travel bucket list.”
Edinburgh council leader Cammy Day said: “It’s fantastic that Edinburgh has topped the Time Out Index as the best city to visit in the world right now. I’m incredibly proud to call Edinburgh my home and it’s clear so many other people also want to spend time in this beautiful city.
“Not only is the capital stunning, but it’s extremely walkable, filled with historical charm and green spaces and diverse in its outlook. That’s not to mention our vibrant cultural scene, programme of festivals and thriving hospitality industry, which attract so many people here every year.
“All this is despite an extremely challenging couple of years, which businesses, festivals and hospitality venues have weathered. It’s our outstanding mix of restaurants, cafes and bars, green spaces, events and attractions, shops and hotels – and every single person who works in these industries – who we have to thank for the city’s continued appeal.”
