An Edinburgh Zoo chimp has been fitted with a replacement contraceptive implant while undergoing a vet check-up.
Edith, a 29-year-old female, underwent a range of examinations during the procedure, which was carried out by the team at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.
Contraceptive implants are used as part of responsible population management within the zoo, with implants the same as those used in humans.
Edith also had a heart scan, which is used to detect signs of congenital heart disease, which chimps are susceptible to, just like humans.
After recovering from the anaesthetic, Edith re-joined the 13 other chimps that live in the wildlife conservation charity’s Budongo Trail habitat.
