Zoo welcomes Scotland's first Sloth bear from Czech Republic

Cipísek, the two-year-old bear, arrived at Edinburgh Zoo from Zlin Zoo in the Czech Republic.

Scotland’s first Sloth bear is settling in to his new home at Edinburgh Zoo.

Cipísek, the two-year-old bear, arrived from Zlin Zoo in the Czech Republic and is now taking some time to get used to his new home before his specially designed habitat is fully opened.

Visitors to the zoo may spot the young bear as he explores the outside area. The species are considered at risk of becoming endangered as their forest and grassland homes are vanishing and many fall victim to poachers.

Edinburgh Zoo is hoping to welcome a companion for Cipísek in the coming months.

Alison MacLean, carnivore team leader at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “Cipísek is already beginning to show his personality, and we can’t wait for visitors to see him in his new home.

“Within the new habitat here at the zoo, there is a large outdoor space for him to roam which mimics the species’ natural habitat, including a new den providing visitors with amazing views.

“We can’t wait to welcome another sloth bear from Europe over the coming months as a companion for Cipísek.”
