A section of Smiddy Wynd was shut down on Tuesday following a gas leak in a field in Newmills, Dunfermline.

Emergency services locked down a Fife’s village main street after a gas leak.

Two fire appliances and specialist resources from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were sent to a field in Newmills, Dunfermline just after 11am on Tuesday.

A section of Smiddy Wynd was closed as Scottish Gas Network engineers worked to fix the issue.

There was no reported injuries and crews left the scene after making sure the area was safe.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.06am on Tuesday, October 8, to reports of a gas leak in a field near Main St, Newmills, Dunfermline.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene and assisted partners.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A spokesperson for gas network company SGN said: “Our engineers are on site following third party damage to our gas main.

“We are currently working to make the situation safe for our engineers to begin excavating at the point of the damage, to enable emergency repairs.

“To allow this work to take place, a section of Smiddy Wynd has been closed and a local diversion route is in place. Please be assured we will complete our repairs as quickly as possible.”
