Fife family left in 'shock and pain' after concrete slabbed launched through moving taxi

A family has been left scarred after a slab was allegedly dropped on a moving taxi by a teenager on a flyover in Fife.

Amanda Finlay, 37, her husband, Terry, 36, and their two children had been returning home from a wedding just after midnight on Saturday, August 5, when they got the “fright of their lives”.

The family had been travelling along the B921 from Kirkcaldy when a 12-inch slab of concrete was dropped on their taxi from a pedestrian bridge 16 feet above.

The slab smashed directly into the passenger side of the vehicle into Terry’s face – while glass from the shattered windscreen flew into Amanda’s head, leaving her with a gash across her skull.

Along with the taxi driver, the couple’s children were left uninjured.

“Honestly all I felt was pain,” Amanda told STV News. “I initially checked my kids weren’t injured, then I put my hand to my head and it was covered in blood.

“My kids were crying and screaming, and husband was in the front saying he couldn’t see. We all kept shouting ‘what was that?’

“I saw my husbands face, so I shouted a ton of obscenities into the night for the idiot who did it, all while asking my kids if they were okay and trying to reassure them.”

The family were rushed to Victoria Hospital for treatment, where they spent five and a half hours in the hands of the medical department.

“I couldn’t even tell you how long we waited, I had no concept of time,” Amanda said. “I phoned family, and arranged for the kids to be picked up.”

Six days on, Amanda said her husband is beginning to recover from the ordeal, and that her kids are “dealing with it”.

She added: “My husband is slowly recovering, he can partially open his eye and his sight seems okay so that’s a relief.”

“The kids are now okay. They are dealing with it.”

Police confirmed on Thursday that a 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged in connection with a series of incidents where items were thrown from a pedestrian flyover in Glenrothes.

He is due to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court at a later date.

A spokeperson said: “The incidents occurred on the B921 Kinglassie road between Sunday, July 16, and Sunday, August 14, and two people suffered injuries as a result of one of the incidents.

“The boy has been released on an undertaking to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court at a later date. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
