At its height, four fire engines and a specialist height appliance were sent to the scene.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering the whole of Scotland, apart from Shetland, until 3am on Saturday.

The forecaster has warned that there is a small chance homes and businesses could flood, and that transport networks could be subject to delays and cancellations.

Trains to Glasgow’s Central Station were cancelled on Friday after overhead lines were damaged.

Some parts of the country awoke to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the early hours of Friday morning.

Further thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible on Friday afternoon, before becoming confined to more northern areas of Scotland later in the day.

Frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds with stronger storms have also been forecast.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment on the fires in Midlothian and East Lothian.
