Former Hibs player suing club after 'horrific injuries from tackle' by ex-manager Lee Johnson

A former Hibs player is taking legal action against the club after suffering alleged “horrific injuries” from a tackle with then manager Lee Johnson in training.

Jake Doyle-Hayes suffered an ankle injury in 2022 in a clash on the Hibs training ground with former boss Johnson, leaving him requiring surgery.

The 26-year-old, who now plays for Sligo Rovers, left Hibs by mutual consent in January 2025.

The midfielder was hampered by injuries during his time at Easter Road, making just two appearances for the club in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

The case at the Court of Session was called on Wednesday, with Doyle-Hayes represented by Thompsons Scotland LLP.

The legal firm say the Irish footballer’s career has been “greatly restricted” by the injuries suffered.

Joel Shaw, partner with Thompsons Solicitors: “Our client, Jake Doyle-Hayes suffered horrific injuries from a tackle made by the then manager of Hibernian Football Club, Lee Johnson.

“The impact of this has greatly restricted his career.

“These injuries should never have happened and were incurred due to incompetent and incoherent decisions made by his manager.

“Jake’s career has been derailed by mismanagement and ineptitude.

“A career has been lost to this athlete. We will get him compensation.”

A spokesperson for Hibs said: “The Club is aware of the claim, however as an ongoing matter shall not be commenting further at this stage.”
