A gang attempted to steal a bike using a power tool while riding hired electric cycles in Edinburgh.

The group, who were masked and dressed in black, were filmed trying to cut the bike off a rack in St Andrew Square using an angle grinder.

The footage, which was shared on TikTok, shows the gang on Voi bikes which are part of Edinburgh’s new cycle scheme.

The bike is chained to a rack while two suspects are hunched over it as orange sparks are seen flying from the power tool.

Voi condemned the incident, saying anti-social riding is “never acceptable”.

Police are reviewing CCTV from the area and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “An investigation is under way after police received reports regarding of a group of youths attempting to steal a bike in St Andrew Square in Edinburgh on Monday, October 6, 2025.

“Officers are reviewing relevant CCTV footage from in and around the area for additional information on the group and enquiries are ongoing.

“If anyone has any information or footage of the incident, please contact us via 101.”

A Voi spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and are working with the council and local police to assist with the investigation.

“Anti-social riding is never acceptable. Whilst the vast majority of our e-bike riders in Edinburgh follow the rules, we take action against those who don’t. We urge anyone to report any concerns immediately using report.voi.com or email support@voi.com so we can act fast.

“Every day, hundreds depend on our e-bikes for affordable, sustainable and safe journeys. We will continue delivering for the people of Edinburgh, connecting them to place, employment and education.”

Edinburgh Council has been contacted for comment.
