Glenochil Prison caught 35 inmates high on drugs on Christmas DaySPS

Five prisoners were taken to hospital after more than 30 were caught under the influence of drugs on Christmas Day.

A total of 35 inmates were found to be under the influence of drugs at HMP Glenochil in Clackmannanshire on December 25.

The drugs were reportedly smuggled into the jail with the illegal use of drones.

Five of the prisoners were taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said attempts to bring illicit substances into prisons were posing a “significant threat” to the health and well-being of prisoners and staff.

Staff at HMP Glenochil seized weapons, drugs and mobile phones on Christmas Day.

The incident comes after an inquiry was opened into the deaths of four inmates at the same prison, three of which involved drugs.

Their deaths happened within a four-month period and involved the consumption of a variety of illegal and prescription drugs, including etizolam – also known as street valium or benzos.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “Any attempt to bring illicit substances into our establishment, including by a drone, poses a significant threat to the health and wellbeing of those in our care, and the safety our staff, and we will use all technological and intelligence tools available to prevent this wherever possible.

“We continue to work with Police Scotland and other partners to take action against those who attempt to breach our security.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We work closely with the Scottish Prison Service to tackle drugs entering prisons.

“We remain committed to tackling the harm caused by the misuse of contraband substances and prohibited items in prisons.

“Joint operations using specialist resources, including dog units, are carried out to deter any offending.

“Anyone with concerns can call officers on 101 or alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
