A Hibs player has revealed they are “overwhelmed with love” after the money raised in a fundraiser will allow her mum, who was left in a coma in Tenerife, to be flown home to Scotland.
Julie McLaren, the mother of Hibs player Siobhan Hunter, was placed into an induced coma at a hospital in the Canary Islands after an aneurysm burst in her brain and she collapsed down a set of stairs.
The 57-year-old, from Dalkeith in Midlothian, underwent emergency brain surgery on January 8 after the accident left her with fractures to her skull and bleeds on her brain.
Hunter and her sister Georgi launched a GoFundMe in an effort to raise money to help family members stay on the island and to personally rent an air ambulance in an effort to return her to Scotland.
The family issued a further plea on social media on Wednesday, revealing they were “desperate” to get her home within the next two days.
Following the plea, the GoFundMe raised £52,106, which included a £1000 donation from the Hanlon Stevenson Foundation, and Julie will now be flown home to Scotland in due course.
Siobhan took to Twitter to share her appreciation, revealing she was “overwhelmed with support and love”.
She said: “From the bottom of my heart. thank you. We are all overwhelmed with the support & love. Every single person, thank you so so so much.
“My mum is coming home.”
