A Hibernian football player has pleaded for help after her mum was left in a coma following a “freak accident” in Tenerife.
More than £30,000 has been raised for Julie McLaren, from Dalkeith in Midlothian, who is currently in a critical condition after an aneurysm burst in her brain and she collapsed down a set of stairs.
The 57-year-old, the mother of Hibs player Siobhan Hunter, has been put into an induced coma at a hospital in the Canary Islands after the accident left her with fractures to her skull and bleeds on her brain.
She underwent emergency brain surgery on Monday, yet remains fighting for her life in intensive care.
Hunter and her sister Georgi have launched a GoFundMe in an effort to raise money to help family members stay on the island with Ms McLaren as she undergoes treatment.
“She has been placed in an induced coma and is in a critical condition,” Georgi Hunter wrote on the fundraiser.
“We are raising funds to enable us as a family to stay with her. Unfortunately things are not looking good and we as a family are unable to finance staying with our mum.
“Please help us stay with her. Any donations would be gratefully received.
“Please put my mum in your prayers every single minute you have. I need my mum more than you will ever know and I need her to guide me through life.
“Without her, I don’t know if I can do this horrible life. She’s amazing – beautiful, strong, independent, hard-working, funny, lively… I’d take every mood swing over this, please mum, wake up.”
The fundraiser, which has a goal of £40,000, currently sits at £31,788.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has been hospitalised in Spain and we are in contact with the local authorities.”
