Hunt for youths on illegal e-bikes after dog killed in hit-and-run

Police in Midlothian are hunting two youths on e-bikes after a dog was killed following a hit-and-run.

Officers are appealing for information following the death of a dog after it was struck by an illegal electric bike in the Rosewell area on August 25.

Police received a report that an e-bike had struck a whippet on the cycle path between Bonnyrigg and Rosewell, near Pentland Crescent, around 10.30am.

The riders of the two e-bikes, who were wearing balaclavas, did not stop.

The dog died a short time later.

Constable Donald Macleod said: “We are keen to trace the two male youths riding the bikes, and we are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to contact us.

“This is a stark reminder of the dangers involved in riding illegal e-bikes in populated areas without any consideration for others.

“We will continue to stop and seize illegally used e-bikes and e-scooters, and we would urge members of the public to only use those designed and intended for use on the road and stop placing themselves and others in danger.”
