Lauriston Castle launches programme to celebrate 100 years open to public

Lauriston Castle is marking 100 years as a public treasure with a 1920s-themed programme of events.

The Edinburgh estate was gifted to the nation by its last owners Mr William Reid and his wife Margaret in 1926.

Now, a new centenary programme has been launched, featuring a full calendar of heritage-themed events with a 1920s twist.

The year-long programme includes murder mystery dinners, film screenings, creative workshops and family activities.

In August, the 1920s-inspired scavenger hunt, reflecting popular leisure activities of the era, will have guests following the clues to meet some characters from the past while enjoying the beauty of the grounds.

The original castle on this site dated back to medieval times but was almost completely destroyed by English armies.

Rebuilt in the 16th century, the tower house passed through a number of owners until cabinet maker Mr Reid purchased it in 1902.

Collaborating with architect Robert Lorimer and his brother-in-law William Barton, Reid had the home modernised and extensively remodelled, with plumbing and electricity installed throughout.

The couple, who had no children, decided to leave the castle to Scotland on the condition it was left as it was gifted.

Much of how life would have been during the Reids’ time here has been preserved with fine art and furnishings.

Castle steward Tracey Robertson described it as “a little treasure box.”

“It feels like people still live in the house; all furniture is still here. It’s like they have gone back on holiday and they’ll be back anytime soon.

“You can come in and see how people lived in those days.”

Visitors will be able to enjoy the return of Japan Sakura, offering another weekend of fun, with the opportunity to take part in traditional crafts and hands-on activities for all ages.

Culture and Communities Convener Margaret Graham said: “Lauriston Castle is one of Edinburgh’s most treasured sites, and the centenary is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate both its past and its future.

“This programme brings together heritage, creativity and community in a way that reflects the spirit of Mr and Mrs Reid’s generous gift.

“We look forward to welcoming new and returning visitors to discover everything that Lauriston has to offer in 2026.”

Many events will be free to attend, with some ticketed experiences available through advance booking. Details of all events are listed on the Culture Edinburgh website.
