A lion rescued from a travelling circus more than a decade ago has died at Five Sisters Zoo, marking the end of an era for the West Lothian attraction.
Skinny, the last surviving member of four lions taken in by the zoo in 2015, passed away following age-related health problems.
Zoo staff said the decision to put him down was made after consultation between veterinary and keeping teams to prioritise his welfare.
Paying tribute, they said: “Skinny arrived at the zoo in October 2015 alongside three other lions — Boss, Twin 1 and Twin 2 — after being rescued from a travelling circus. #
“The rescue was carried out in partnership with Belgian organisation Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek, and supporters raised £150,000 to build a purpose-designed habitat for the animals.
“The arrival of the lions became a defining moment for the zoo, helping shape its identity as a rescue-focused organisation committed to providing sanctuary for animals in need.
“Named because he was noticeably slimmer than his companions when he first arrived, Skinny often required separate feeding time to ensure he finished his meals. Keepers said he developed a routine of doing things in his own way within the group.”
In March last year, Skinny underwent surgery to remove an eye following a severe condition.
The procedure was carried out by wildlife vet Dr Romain Pizzi, and he recovered well, returning to normal behaviour under close supervision.
In recent weeks, however, the lion’s health declined due to age-related complications. Staff said the decision to say goodbye was taken to ensure his comfort.
Although Skinny was the last of the original four rescued lions, the enclosure they once shared is now home to two lionesses, Luna and Plusza, rescued from the war in Ukraine. The fundraising campaign originally launched for the 2015 rescue continues to support ongoing animal welfare work.
Five Sisters Zoo thanked keepers, veterinary staff, supporters and visitors for their role in caring for Skinny throughout his life, saying his legacy would live on through future rescues.
