A man charged with allegedly murdering an elderly grandmother in the Scottish Borders has died behind bars.
Emergency services were called to reports of the death of a woman at around 3.05am on December 9, 2024, at a property on Wood Street, Galashiels.
Margaret Maude Hanson, 84, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Graham John Hanson, 84, appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on December 10 charged with murder.
He made no plea during his appearance.
Hanson was committed for further examination and remanded in custody at the time.
The Scottish Prison Service has confirmed that the 84-year-old died behind bars on April 9 at HMP Edinburgh.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.
“Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland is advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. Fatal Accident Inquiries are held in due course.”
