Man dies after fire breaks out at Edinburgh flat block

A man has been pronounced dead at the scene of a fire in Edinburgh.

Emergency services rushed to a block of flats on Calder Gardens in the city’s Sighthill area at around 12.50am on Monday morning following reports of the fire.

A 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service put out the blaze and the block was not evacuated.

Police Scotland has confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances and enquiries remain ongoing as part of a joint investigation.

David Dourley, SFRS area commander, said: “We were alerted at 00.46am on Monday, January 29 to reports of a dwelling fire in Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised five fire appliances to the city’s Calder Gardens, where firefighters extinguished the fire and worked to make the area safe before leaving the scene.

“Sadly, a man was found to have passed away at the scene.

“Our thoughts are very much with all of those affected at this time.

“A joint investigation with Police Scotland is ongoing.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 00.50am on Monday, 29 January, we were called to a report of a fire at a flat in the Calder Gardens area of Edinburgh.

“Emergency services attended and a 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“No one else was injured and the building was not evacuated.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“However, there are no suspicious circumstances at this time.”
