A man who broke into the home of a vulnerable pensioner and raped her has been jailed.

Kyle McKenzie, 23, was sentenced to 11 years for the ‘brutal attack’ on the 83-year-old.

The incident took place at the woman’s home in Glenrothes, in Fife, on June 25, 2020.

McKenzie, then aged 21, wore a balaclava when he entered the property before threatening her with a garden tool.

He then went on to attack and rape the 83-year-old, who is registered as disabled.

The pensioner managed to get help by pressing a personal safety alarm.

McKenzie was caught by police after DNA from the scene was linked to him.

At the High Court in Edinburgh in November, he admitted rape and breaking into another home before the attack.

On Friday, McKenzie was jailed for 11 years at the same court.

He was also made subject to a five-year extended supervision order on release, and must sign the sex offenders register.

Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences Fraser Gibson said the woman had shown “remarkable bravery and resilience” during the prosecution process.

“Kyle McKenzie inflicted a brutal and terrifying attack on a vulnerable woman in her own home,” he said.

“She has shown remarkable bravery and resilience during the prosecution process and I hope the sentence imposed today brings her some small comfort.

“While crimes like this are thankfully rare, the Crown takes seriously its responsibility to protect the public from such offending and will continue to prosecute offenders robustly and fairly.”

Following the sentencing, senior investigating officer DI Darren Stewart said that McKenzie had shown no contrition for his “reprehensible behaviour” when he was charged.

“Kyle McKenzie is clearly a very dangerous, opportunistic individual,” said Stewart.

“He carried out particularly brutal attack on a vulnerable woman, submitting her to a harrowing ordeal in the one place in the world she should have been safest, her own home.

“He showed no contrition for his reprehensible behaviour when he was charged. However, he will now face the consequences of his actions having admitted his guilt.

“A large scale police investigation was carried out following this incident which ultimately identified McKenzie as being the individual responsible.”

The officer added: “I want to take the opportunity to thank the public and partner agencies for their assistance and information provided, particularly in providing support to the woman involved.

“Police Scotland treats all reports of sexual crime with the utmost professionalism and sensitivity in order to bring perpetrators of such crimes such as Kyle McKenzie to justice. “
