Mourners wishing to pay respects to the Queen have been urged to join queues to St Giles’ Cathedral as soon as possible before the closure at 3pm.

People have shown up in their tens of thousands through the night since the Queen was laid to rest in the historic cathedral.

The coffin will be moved at 4.30pm on Tuesday when the monarch will depart Scotland for the final time.

The Scottish Government have said: “Her Majesty The Queen’s Lying at Rest at St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, opens to the public at around 5.30pm on Monday 12 September and will be open overnight until it closes at 3pm on Tuesday 13 September.

“If you wish to attend the Lying at Rest, please note that there will be a queue to enter. The queue may close early in order to ensure as many people as possible can enter St Giles’ Cathedral to pay their respects.”

Many queued for hours through the night and early hours of Tuesday morning.

Those still wishing to travel to the centre of Edinburgh to join the queue have been urged to do so as soon as possible.

The Scottish Government issued an update at 6am stating that wait times to enter St Giles’ Cathedral are approximately two hours long.

Just after 9am the wait times had decreased to one hour, however anyone still to join the queue has been warned that this is expected to lengthen throughout the day.

People wishing to join the queue have been urged to expect long waits and come dressed for the weather.

Wait times through the night were expected to last more than 12 hours, however people trying to get into St Giles’ Cathedral said they waited for approximately five to six hours.

Edinburgh resident, Gavin Hamilton said he warned the wait could last 13 hours, however he managed to make it into the cathedral before 3am.

He said: “It took about five and a quarter hours waiting in line to see her.

“There were people in the queue with me who had travelled from Aberdeen, over 100 miles away, to do this. There were thousands of people in line at 12.30am at the start of the queue.

“The people were still (lining up) after 2.50 am when I got into the cathedral.”

The Scottish Government has issued advice to those joining the queue.

The statement read: “Please note that the queue is expected to be very long. You will need to stand for long periods of time, possibly many hours, with very little opportunity to sit down, as the queue will keep moving.

“Please consider this before you decide to attend or bring children with you. In order to assist with managing the queue, wristbands will be issued. Only one wristband per person will be issued and individuals will have to be present to collect one. You will only be permitted to enter the queue if you have a valid wristband.

“Step-free and accessible options are available for those who need them.”

Mourners are also being reminded to only bring one small bag per person with more details available on the Scottish Government website.
