Police ScotlandThe mother of a man who was murdered in Leith says she is “truly heartbroken” after flowers she left in memory of her son were stolen on the anniversary of his death.
A 17-year-old was jailed for life with a minimum term of 17 years in June, after being convicted of murdering 22-year-old John McNab in September last year.
The teenager lay in wait for John before chasing him and striking him repeatedly with a knife.
The youth carried out an earlier attack with a knife in March of the same year at the promenade at Portobello beach when he pursued a 16-year-old boy and seriously wounded him.
Following that attack, he was released on bail.
‘Truly heartbroken’
John’s mother, Lisa Petrie, said the flowers which she had laid on a lamppost at Barclays, where her son was killed, have been stolen on the anniversary of his death.
She wrote on social media “Today is my beautiful son’s first anniversary of his death, and I went along yesterday to where he closed his eyes forever at Barclays to put fresh flowers on the lamppost which everyone can see I done.
“Well I want to thank the sick individual that decided to steal them! Just when I think I can count on my community to stand with me some sick person has to ruin that.
“Am truly heart broken everyone knows they are my John’s flowers.”
Vigil
John’s mother has organised a vigil to be held in Leith tonight (September 2).
People are invited to visit his mural at Leith Links for a balloon release at 6pm, before heading to the Knife Angel statue.
The procession will then head to Barclays, where flowers can be laid in John’s memory.
