A charity shop’s annual January extravaganza sale has raised nearly £32,000.
Generous donors gifted antiques to Shelter Scotland such as a copy of Wuthering Heights which was published 11 years after the novel first came out, and Bakelite amber jewellery.
The shop, in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, raised £1,950 within the first 30 minutes of opening on January 3.
There were queues around the block as shoppers waited to get in to trawl through racks of vintage clothes including Chanel, Gucci and Burberry.
By lunchtime, £13,900 had been racked up behind the till, and £31,834 was raised in total, including in the Shelter bookshop, breaking previous records.
The event has been held for 22 years and volunteers put goods aside for 12 months to ensure the new year sale remains a destination for collectors and bargain hunters.
The “New Edition” 1858 copy of Wuthering Heights was sold for £150, a customer paid £100 for a Bob Mackie Barbie doll, while there were also signed David Attenborough books available.
Shop manager Peter Jew said: “This is a chance to showcase and celebrate our donations and we’re immensely grateful to everyone who contributed.”
Shelter Scotland director Alison Watson said: “For more than two decades now the January Stockbridge launch event has been marked in the calendars of Edinburgh’s discerning shoppers.
“Scotland’s housing emergency now means there are more than 10,110 children in Scotland with nowhere to call home and more and more people are becoming homeless.
“Your support keeps us in the fight against homelessness, so I’d like to thank all our customers and donors for their generosity and for another record-breaking year.”
