NHS Forth Valley lift visiting restrictions imposed after ‘sharp and early’ rise in fluLDRS

Hospital chiefs have lifted visiting restrictions imposed after a sharp and early rise in seasonal flu in NHS Forth Valley.

The measures were brought in to protect local patients and staff on December 3.

Normal visiting arrangements resumed across all inpatient areas from Friday, December 19.

Visitors are encouraged to check with local wards before attending, as visiting arrangements may vary depending on local clinical needs.

The decision has been taken in response to local infection control data, which suggests flu levels may be beginning to stabilise in terms of hospital admissions after a sharp rise.

However, the situation will be kept under close review, and visiting restrictions may be reintroduced in the future if the situation changes to help reduce the spread of infection and protect vulnerable patients

NHS Forth Valley executive nurse director, Prof Karen Goudie, said: “We have seen some early positive signs which suggest flu cases, particularly in local hospitals, have reduced.

“This means we can ease the visiting restrictions and use of face masks, and I would like to thank the public, patients and staff for co-operating with these temporary arrangements over the last few weeks.”

But staff will keep a close eye on developments despite the easing of restrictions.

Prof Goudie added: “However, there is no room for complacency, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation and may reintroduce restrictions if cases of flu begin to rise.

“It is also important to remember that the virus is still circulating in our communities so please avoid visiting hospitals, care homes or other healthcare settings if you are feeling unwell. Even mild cold or flu symptoms may have serious consequences for vulnerable patients.

“Please continue to practice good hand hygiene and consider wearing a face mask if you are attending a healthcare appointment and have any concerns about your infection risk. Face masks remain available at the entrances to wards and clinical areas.”

Flu vaccination drop-in sessions continue to take place in local vaccination centres across Forth Valley and many local pharmacies are also offering flu vaccinations. Details are available on the NHS Forth Valley website or by calling the local vaccination team 0800 130 3120.

Anyone eligible who has not yet been vaccinated is strongly encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible to help protect against flu and reduce the risk of severe illness.
