Parking charges are set to be introduced at car parks in the Pentland Hills following a six-month voluntary contribution trial.
Visitors to four popular car parks were encouraged to donate for parking during the trial period, but the charges are now expected to become mandatory by the end of the year.
Some locals have raised concerns that the move could put people off visiting the area.
The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a popular destination for dog walkers and nature lovers and has seen visitor numbers increase over recent years.
Over the past six months, drivers parking at Flotterstone, Bonaly, Harlow and Threipmuir have been invited to make voluntary contributions.
However, the charges now look likely to become a permanent fixture after a committee meeting discussed the details of the proposal.
Those behind the plans say the scheme could generate around £300,000 a year and would help ensure the long-term sustainability of the park.
The proposed parking charges will be the same as the current suggested voluntary contributions: £2.50 for up to two hours; £5 for a full day (6am-10pm); £10 for a vehicle parked overnight; and £20 for a motorhome parked overnight.
If agreed, the charges would be introduced at the car parks at Flotterstone, Bonaly, Harlow and Threipmuir and they could become a permanent part of the Pentlands by the end of the year.
