The Royal Navy bomb squad has destroyed an unexploded wartime bomb after it was discovered on Portobello Beach.

Police locked down the beach in Edinburgh and asked residents to stay indoors after the potentially “suspicious item” was found at around 9.50am on Tuesday.

A cordon was erected opposite the junction of Kings Road and Kings Place.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was contacted and attended the scene.

The item was found to be an unexploded wartime munition, and a controlled explosion took place, after which the cordon was lifted.

Local residents had been advised to stay indoors and the public was advised to avoid the area.

“There is no threat to the wider public”, a police spokesperson said.
