An exhibition delving into the past, present and future of the relationship between Scotland and India through print and multimedia artwork has opened to the public in Edinburgh.
‘From Where I Stand’ is available to view at Edinburgh Printmakers on Dundee Street, the showcase has already visited Ahmedabad and Delhi in India.
The exhibition, devised by the Printmakers in partnership with Flow India, was curated by 18 young art workers.
It’s hoped it will help them foster collaboration and empower co-curators to develop invaluable industry skills.
The ‘From Where I stand’ title captures the curatorial desire to reject the existence of one ‘objective’ point of view when recording and analysing the political and interpersonal relationships between India and Scotland.
Vrushali Mehta is one of the Co-Curators, she’s travelled to Edinburgh for the launch of the exhibition in Scotland.
She said: “It’s been incredibly valuable for me, not just in terms of getting to know the relationship between India and Scotland.
“But just myself, and how I see this world, how I perceive it.
“The second most important thing that I think all of the fellows talk about is the kind of friendships we’ve made, we’ve just gotten to know each other to a level where we wouldn’t have without this fellowship.”
Printmakers CEO Janet Archer told STV News: “Print making it’s a really interesting form and you’ll see when you talk to the fellows and to the artists how precious printmaking is.
“Edinburgh printmakers was established in 1967 so we’re coming up to our 60th birthday party in a few years time.
“It’s fantastic to be able to open our doors and connect to different people internationally and welcome people internationally here, which of course Edinburgh has a massive reputation in terms of being able to attract visitors.”
Artists featured are Claire Barclay, Nishi Chodimella, Anupa Gardner, Sushanta Guha, Sonia Mehra Chawla, Shiva Nallaperumal and Swapnaa Tamhane.
Claire said: “The print works I make are informed by my sculptural practice, and usually presented in pairings or series that draw attention to the materials and methods of production.
“The relief prints I created for From Where I Stand utilized cut wood and leather shapes with which I improvised during the printing process.
“The resulting works seem suggestive of unfamiliar functions or redundant objects from manufacturing contexts.
“I welcomed the chance to work at Edinburgh Printmakers for the first time.
“It is always enlightening to experience the subtly different approaches within other print workshop environments and to challenge and inspire new paths for the work through engaging with the printmaking community there.”
The exhibition is open to the public at the Edinburgh Printmakers studio at 1 Dundee Street in Edinburgh until December 3.
