Protection zones have been brought into force following outbreaks of bird flu at farms in Midlothian and the Scottish Borders.

Scotland’s chief veterinary officer said the H5N1 subtype of avian influenza was detected at Halls Farm in Penicuik and Kingside Farm in West Linton this week.

Disease control zones have been brought in around the sites, along with a wider surveillance zone.

It brings the total number of protection zones in the local area up to three, after another outbreak was reported last week.

These areas are shown on an official map and carry specific legal restrictions, which remain in place until they are changed or removed.

Bird keepers are being urged to check whether they are inside one of these zones.

Anyone keeping poultry, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks or geese, or captive birds like pigeons or birds of prey within the control zones has been told they must register or update their details on the Scottish Kept Bird Register.

Anyone concerned about the health of their birds, or who suspects they may have bird flu, should contact the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) immediately on 03000 600 708.
