Pupils return to high school two months after fire

Pupils are returning to a high school in the Scottish Borders this week – two months after it was torn apart by a fire.

Parts of Peebles High School were badly damaged during a blaze on Thursday, November 28 and, as a result, pupils have been taught at alternative sites.

However, S4 to S6 pupils will return on Monday following the conclusion of their prelim exams, while S1 to S3 pupils will be back on Tuesday.

Fire: Peebles High School.

A small number of pupils with complex needs will continue their education at a specialist facility at Galashiels Academy, where they have been since December 3.

Tracey Logan, chief executive of Scottish Borders Council, said: “Phasing the return of pupils enables us to manage the preparations effectively.

Damage: Pupils had to be taught at alternative sites.

“An enormous amount of work has been needed to get us to the position of having all year groups back together in one location.

“We do still have work to complete on site, but we are now confident that the return of pupils can take place.”
