A lifeboat was dispatched after a 30ft sailing vessel lost its mast near Queensferry on Tuesday.

The rescue crew was returning from another incident when they were alerted to a distress signal in the Blackness area in the Firth of Forth from a dismasted vessel carrying four people on board.

RNLI Queensferry was tasked by HM Coastguard to stand by and assist the vessel if required.

The stranded boat was drifting northward towards Limekilns when the team arrived; however a nearby yacht had confirmed that all the people on board were safe and well.

Two lifeboat crew members boarded the vessel to help the casualty crew secure the mast and sail on the deck.

A piece of rigging that runs from the top of the mast to the bow or foredeck, known as the forestay, had to be cut to allow for debris to be brought on board.

After safely securing the mast, the crew checked there was nothing in the water nearby the propeller.

The lifeboat shadowed the vessel to its berth and a lifeboat crew member remained on board to assist.

The vessel was met at Port Edgar by South Queensferry Coastguard Rescue Teams.
