Red panda has tooth removed after zoo keepers noticed he had gone off his food

One of Edinburgh Zoo’s red pandas was put under for a health check after keepers noticed he had gone off his food.

Bruce was given a general anaesthetic for the check-up, which found that his only problem was a poorly tooth.

Vets removed the tooth and gave the 11-year-old grandfather a full-body MOT to make sure he was otherwise fit and healthy.

He was given a clean bill of health and is now back in his habitat.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland say he can be seen exploring for bamboo and napping in the trees as usual.

Bruce is the grandfather of Priya, the female red panda who moved into Highland Wildlife Park earlier this year.

He is the only red panda currently living at Edinburgh Zoo.

Despite their name, red pandas are not related to giant pandas. They are placed in their own separate family, Ailuridae and are closer relations of raccoons, skunks and weasels.
