A sell-out rave that was due to take place in Edinburgh has been axed to allow a vaccination centre at the same venue to carry on its work.

The First Minister was asked by the Scottish Lib Dem leader about Saturday night’s Trick Scotland event headlined by DJ Patrick Topping at the Royal Highland Centre.

Around 3500 revellers were expected to attend the rave.

Alex Cole-Hamilton said operators were contractually obliged to begin dismantling the vaccine hub on Tuesday to make way for the event.

However, Nicola Sturgeon said action was under way to cancel the rave as it was “no longer appropriate” for the event to take place.

The First Minister said she had spoken to health secretary Humza Yousaf about the issue first thing on Tuesday morning.

She said: “Action is under way to cancel the rave, to make sure there is full compensation for that and make sure that the vaccination centre in its current location continues.

“The health secretary has been working on this all morning.”

Sturgeon added that with the new faster-spreading variant of the virus now in Scotland, it was “no longer appropriate because we want to increase the facilities for vaccination, not see them go in the opposite direction”.
