A police officer helped end a domestic incident in Midlothian despite being stabbed and “bleeding heavily”.

PC Arron McCall and his team were first through the door after being called to an ongoing incident in Bonnyrigg.

Police Scotland said both a male and female were violent towards officers, and PC McCall was stabbed in one arm and slashed on the other.

Although bleeding heavily, he managed to help other officers restrain the suspect and bring an end to the incident.

He then assessed and began treating his injuries, allowing fellow officers to continue dealing with the matter.

Colleagues said his actions also prevented others on the scene from being harmed.

PC McCall has been nominated for the Individual Bravery award at the Scottish Police Federation’s annual awards for his actions on the day.

CS Paul Griffiths, who nominated him, said the incident had a “profound effect” on the wider team, and that PC McCall led the way in raising morale in the aftermath.

He said: “He acted with outstanding bravery throughout and assisted other officers until both the violent male and his violent female partner had been restrained.

“He considered his colleagues despite his injuries and acted in a brave and professional manner.

“PC McCall’s actions were above and beyond what would be expected of any officer.”

He has been nominated alongside 29 Scottish officers, including constables, sergeants, detectives, and inspectors, who have been shortlisted for their lifesaving acts of bravery and commitment to their communities.

David Threadgold, chair of the Scottish Police Federation, said the nominations demonstrate the “extraordinary” bravery and commitment of officers.

“The situations dealt with by police serving our communities can sometimes be extremely dangerous, and none of us should ever take what they do for granted,” he said.

“Our annual awards are a moment to recognise those who go above and beyond to keep the public safe with dignity and resolve, before coming back to work to do it all again.”

He added: “We are incredibly proud of all the nominees and are grateful to each of them for their amazing achievements. They are a credit to themselves and to Scottish policing.”

Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “These awards are an important night in the policing calendar when we recognise and celebrate our officers for their vital public service.

“I thank all officers and their families for everything they do for policing and our communities and offer warm congratulations to nominees and recipients.”
