A teenage boy has died in a crash involving two cars, with four people taken to hospital in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to the collision on the A701 at Hearthstane near Tweedsmuir around 2.40pm on Friday.

The crash involved a black BMW 530e and a yellow Fiat 500 Abarth.

A 15-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Fiat, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 54-year-old male driver of the Fiat and his 21-year-old male passenger were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The 27-year-old male driver of the BMW and his 26-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The driver was subsequently arrested and released pending further enquiries.

The road was closed for crash investigation work and reopened around 11pm on Friday.

Sergeant Jamie Humpage said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the boy who died, and they have asked for privacy at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone in the area at the time who saw what happened to get in touch.

“Please also check any dash-cam footage you have to see if it has captured something that could assist with our investigation.”

Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1818 of Friday, April 17, 2026.
