Three people have been arrested following a multi-vehicle crash near Edinburgh Airport that left one woman dead.

The four-vehicle crash, involving a grey Mercedes A250, a black Renault Captur, a grey Skoda Karoq and a grey Hyundai i30, occurred at around 9.20am on Glasgow Road near Newbridge on Monday.

Emergency services attended; however, the 58-year-old female driver of the Hyundai i30 was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four others were taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

The two women and a man, who were in the Mercedes, left the scene on foot prior to officers arriving.

Now three people have been arrested in connection with the crash, including two women aged 25 and 19 and a 32-year-old man.

The road was closed in both directions, resulting in diversions and delays for commuters and holidaymakers heading to Edinburgh Airport.

Sergeant Mike Thomson said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who died.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

‘I heard an almighty bang’

Tom Brumfitt, who lives locally, said that he thought the “worst” after hearing someone run past his home in hysterics.

“I heard an almighty bang, I was sleeping at the time.

“I was woken up by somebody screaming, walking up and down just outside the bedroom. I was thinking the worst.”

They also heard someone run past the house in “hysterics”.

“By the time I got outside and then seen the damage and the vehicles involved in the crash.

“People were moving their cars for emergency services. Emergency services were on the scene very, very quickly.”
