Three puppies have been found abandoned “great amount of distress“ in the Scottish Borders.
The animal rescue charity the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) were called to the village of Carlops on the outskirts of the Pentland Hills on Tuesday evening after reports of the dogs on a country road.
The animals are all male, around 15 to 16 weeks old and are all crossbreeds.
The charity say they were in a poorly condition and found to have worms.
A couple living in a nearby house, who did not own the puppies, offered to care for them until an animal welfare officer could arrive.
SSPCA inspector, Emma Phillips, said: “It is unclear whether the dogs have been abandoned or managed to escape.
“The puppies were not in the best of condition and, upon further inspection, have been found to have worms.
“We understand that people’s circumstances can change, but this is not the right way to give up an animal and these dogs would have been caused a great amount of distress.
“Thankfully the boys are now safe and being cared for by one of our rescue and rehoming centres.
