Two of the six possums rescued after being “cruelly” abandoned outside a Lidl supermarket in West Lothian are pregnant.
The sugar gliders were found discarded in a box last month, leaving them vulnerable and exposed to the elements.
Five Sisters Zoo sprang into action after Police Scotland and the Scottish SPCA alerted it to the “shocking” animal abandonment.
The sugar gliders have now undergone a full health check and have been found to be four females and two males. Two of the females were carrying developing young in their pouches.

The condition of the young is not known but being exposed to the cold and stress of abandonment poses serious risks to both the offspring and their parents.
As the sugar gliders approach the end of their 30-day quarantine, they are being provided with specialised care.
