Two people have been rescued after being blown out to sea in their kayak near North Berwick.

North Berwick RNLI’s lifeboat was launched after reports of an inflatable in trouble at around 3.50pm on Tuesday.

Members of North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) said the kayakers were being blown rapidly towards open sea by near gale-force winds.

The team estimated that the rate of drift was so strong that the casualties would not have been able to paddle back to land.

Guided by members of North Berwick CRT, and tour vessels from the Scottish Seabird Centre, the RNLI crew located the vessel and brought two casualties safely ashore.

A spokesperson for RNLI North Berwick urged people not to use inflatable SUPs, pool toys and kayaks during offshore winds.

“Always check the forecast, if it shows an offshore wind, don’t go out, conditions close inshore may seem fine, but further offshore they can be significantly worse,” they said.

“In any conditions, always wear a personal flotation device (lifejacket or buoyancy aid) and carry a waterproof, means of calling for help (phone in a waterproof pouch, handheld VHF radio).”

They added: “In any coastal emergency, dial 999 for the Coastguard”
