US-bound flight forced into emergency landing at Scottish airport

A plane bound for the United States was forced to make an emergency landing in Edinburgh after a “mid-air emergency”.

The United Airlines flight, travelling from Frankfurt to Chicago, issued a 700 squawk code, signalling an emergency onboard, at around 9am on Tuesday – just an hour after take off.

The squawk was issued as the plane crossed the border into Scotland, and the aircraft made a descent to 25,000ft at around 9.20am.

The plane landed at Edinburgh Airport safely at around 9.48am.

Edinburgh Airport confirmed it accepted the divert and the aircraft landed without issue.

The circumstances behind the emergency are unknown at this stage.
