Huge queues are expected outside St Giles’ Cathedral on Tuesday as mourners wait to view the Queen’s coffin.
She is spending her final day in Scotland before being taken home to Buckingham Palace.
A number of main roads in Edinburgh will be closed between 4pm and 6.30pm – Johnstone Terrace, Lothian Road, Queensferry Street, Dean Bridge and Queensferry Road – as the coffin is taken to the airport.
Accompanied by the Queen’s daughter Princess Anne and vice-admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the coffin will be carried onto a Royal Air Force plane as the Royal Regiment of Scotland hold a guard of honour.
There will also be a royal salute and the regiment’s band will perform.
The national anthem will be played as the plane takes off for RAF Northolt.
After landing around an hour later, the coffin will be driven by hearse to Buckingham Palace, following a route along the A40, Eastbourne Terrace, Lancaster Gate, Bayswater Road, Marble Arch, Park Lane Hyde Park Corner and Constitution Hill.
The Queen will then rest in the palace’s Bow Room overnight.
