Woman, 73, and two dogs die after fire breaks out in early hours

A woman and her two dogs have died in a house fire in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services were called to Balnagowan Road in Selkirk at around 5.35am on Saturday.

Police confirmed a 73-year-old woman was found dead along with her two pets.

She has since been named as Jessie Dahill. Her family have requested privacy at this time.

Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances behind the fire but it is not believed to be suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.35am on Saturday, February 22, 2025, we were made aware of a fire at a property on Balnagowan Road in Selkirk. 

“Emergency services attended and a woman and two dogs were pronounced dead at the scene. 

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.” 

Group Commander Andrea McCann said: “We were alerted at 5.29am on Saturday, February 22, to reports of a dwelling fire on Balnagowan Road, Selkirk.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene, where firefighters worked to extinguish a fire affecting a terraced house.

“Sadly, a woman died at the scene. Two dogs also sadly died.

“Our thoughts are very much with her family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.

“A joint investigation alongside Police Scotland is now ongoing.”
