A woman has been airlifted to hospital after falling from rocks at a Fife beach.

She was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after rescue teams were alerted to the incident in East Wemyss, north of Kirkcaldy, just before 1am on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 0048 hours today to attend an incident in East Wemyss.

“We dispatched one ambulance, a paramedic response unit and our special operations team to the scene. One female patient was transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.”

A lifeboat from Kinghorn RNLI and a coastguard crew helped support the emergency response.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said in a statement: “Just before 1am today (March 10) the Leven and Kinghorn Coastguard Rescue Teams, the Kinghorn RNLI lifeboat and the search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick were sent to assist the Scottish Ambulance Service at East Wemyss beach with a casualty who had fallen from rocks.

“The lifeboat was unable to get close to the shore due to the size of the waves and therefore the casualty was airlifted by the helicopter and taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.”
