A woman has died almost two months after her husband following a carbon monoxide leak at a villa in Spain.

Mary Helena Somerville, 39, was discovered in the Majorca holiday home next to Jaime Carsi, 40, on May 6.

She was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

On Friday it was announced that Ms Somerville, from Abriachan in the Highlands, died in an Edinburgh hospice on July 2.

The couple had reportedly married just two weeks before the incident according the Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora.

The alarm had been raised about the couple when they failed to show up for a boat trip they had booked.

Emergency services on the island were called to the rural property in Cala Mesquida where they found Mr Carsi dead and Ms Somerville unresponsive next to him.

An autopsy found that Mr Carsi, an analyst at an Edinburgh investment firm, had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Guardia Civil has said that the leak was caused by “the breakdown of a refrigerator”.

A spokesperson said: “Guardia Civil is in charge of this investigation.

“It seems that it was an accident due to the breakdown of a refrigerator.”

Tributes have been paid to Ms Somerville and her husband following the news.

Iain Stewart, executive director of Edinburgh Interfaith Association wrote: “Dear Friends. It pains me to share this deeply heart breaking news.

“My good friend and friend of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association Mary Somerville pictured far right sadly passed away at the weekend. Many people will know Mary through her role as a teacher in the Art of Living.

“I will remember Mary for her warm and infectious personality and smile that would light up any room. Please join me in sending prayers to Mary’s family and loved ones.

“At this time as people of faith we are comforted by the belief that Mary will once again be united with her beloved Jaime”

A statement by D. Chrisholm and Sons funeral directors said that Ms Somerville passed away “peacefully” at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh. A funeral ceremony is to be held in Inverness Crematorium with those attending asked to donate if desired in memory of Mary towards The Art of Living UK
