Work to resurface road and bring in cycle lanes set to begin in Edinburgh's Meadowbank area

A major Edinburgh roadworks project will get under way next month to make improvements for drivers and cyclists on a busy carriageway.

London Road between Easter Road and Meadowbank will be resurfaced and new segregated cycle lanes will be installed as part of a six-month programme of works.

A contract to deliver the £2m scheme has been awarded and work will kick off on July 10.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place as crews carry out the job on a mix of daytime and night shift working, according to the council.

As well as the resurfacing the 1-kilometre stretch, cycle bollards will be sited between the junctions of Wishaw Terrace and Marionville Road and along the length of Wishaw Terrace.

In addition there will be traffic light upgrades at London Road’s junctions with Montrose Terrace, Abbey Lane and Marionville Road.

A report said: “The Montrose Terrace and Marionville Road junctions will now include all stop pedestrian stages (with full facilities for visually impaired and disabled pedestrians) and new kerb lines, which will significantly reduce the time it takes pedestrians to negotiate each junction.

“Cycle Early Starts will also be incorporated at the junctions where appropriate.”

Furthermore a new controlled puffin crossing adjacent to McDonald’s and the existing controlled crossing adjacent to Cambusnethan Street are also set to be upgraded.

Hillhouse Quarry Group Ltd, T/A MacAsphalt were confirmed as the contractors at the finance committee on Tuesday (June 20).

The report added: “All costs for this project will be funded from the approved Transport Infrastructure Capital Investment Programme.

The active travel elements of this project have been agreed following consultation with stakeholders including our in-house Active Travel team, Living Streets and Spokes.”
